Dragon Boat Festival

This festival falls on 28 May 2009
The Chang Festival marks the death of a Chinese poet and scholar Qu Yuan who drowned in 296 BC in Hunan province in China . When people heard of his disappearance, they scoured the river in boats to rescue him, beating their drums to scare off the fishes from nibbling at his body. Unable to find his body, they made glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and threw them into the river in the hope that the fishes would eat these dumplings instead of his remains. Boats were decorated with dragon heads on their bows.This festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The tradition of making dumplings (called 'chang') is celebrated by the Chinese community in Malaysia and Singapore with the offering of the dumplings to the gods and their ancestors.

Singapore’s half price surprise is back

Singapore’s half price surprise is back

The Half Price Singapore Surprise promotion is back this year – thanks to an overwhelming number of Malaysians visiting the island republic.
Singapore Tourism Board Asean (M) regional director Chang Chee Pey said the promotion, introduced last year, attracted 47,000 Malaysian visitors.
“We are expecting a larger crowd of at least 60,000 visitors this time,” he said, adding that the promotion would last from May 23 to June 30.

Chinese New Year Cookies

2008 is also called the Brown Rat year. Chinese New Year this year falls on 7 February, 2008.

Travel advice: Malaysia Airlines and Singapore airlines have several daily shuttle flights between the two countries. However flights are always full during peak seasons.

By road or ferry from Singapore to Malaysia

The easiest route to Malaysia is by road. You can drive across to Malaysia through the causeway or through the second link. However, it is a hassle to drive from Malaysia into Singapore if you do not know the many road payment requirements in Singapore. Singapore requires some payment to be made by prepaid cards, etc., so be prepared. It is easier to take a taxi into Singapore, though rather costly.
From Singapore, the causeway take you into the heart of Johor Bahru city while the second link bypasses the city JB and takes you in into the toll/ PLUS expressway that passes through the length of the Malaysian peninsular and goes up to the Malaysia-Thai border.

Alternatively, take the SBS Transit Bus (a Singapore bus service) from Karanji or Queen Street in Singapore to the Sentral Kotaraya Bus Terminal, JB.
